A very informative video from the Royal Forestry Society on the importance of silviculture in response to climate change.
Roger Moore, Entomologist at Forest Research (FR), explains how climate change might affect the vulnerability of our forests to pests and diseases, and how we can manage our forests to increase resilience.
Video by the BRIDGIT Project, voiced by Helen Mirren, raising awareness of yet another potential threat to UK trees. This outlines the need for monitoring and increased awareness around biosecurity.
Bill Mason, Senior Silviculturist at FR, describes how we can manage forests in a changing and uncertain climate.
Diversification of species is the key.
A good video from Our Changing Climate and an issue facing all of us, not just those in the United States. There is a real need to move away (where possible) from clear fell operations within forestry to help protect our soils. With the use of continuous cover silvicultural systems and an understanding of the importance of retaining dead wood and brash (the soil of the future) we can help sustain and grow our woodlands.
A good starting point in understanding the importance of mycorrhizal fungi to our woodland.
We often forget that life continues under foot. In the top 8cm of soil alone, scientists estimate there are 12.8 quadrillion living organisms, weighing 10m tonnes. Much like the terrestrial world, diversity is sadly also decreasing below.
