Woodland Management Plans & PA3 Grant Support

At Greenleaf Forestry, we specialise in the development of comprehensive, Forestry Commission-approved Woodland Management Plans (WMPs), tailored to the unique objectives of each landowner—whether focused on timber production, biodiversity conservation, or habitat restoration.

Our experienced consultants work closely with clients from the outset, typically beginning with an on-site visit to understand the woodland and co-develop a long-term vision. If a current WMP is not in place, we strongly recommend its creation as a foundational tool for sustainable woodland stewardship.

We are highly skilled in securing funding through the Countryside Stewardship scheme, specifically the PA3 Woodland Management Plan grant, which, in most cases, covers the majority of the costs associated with producing a high-quality WMP.

Each plan is designed to last for 10 years and includes:

  • A detailed inventory of species and estimated timber volumes

  • Identification of habitat types and constraints

  • High-resolution mapping and GIS analysis

  • A felling licence valid for the duration of the plan

  • Forecasted timber income estimates to support annual budgeting

Once a WMP is in place and approved, landowners may also be eligible for further Countryside Stewardship funding, with annual payments available based on woodland area to support ongoing improvement and management efforts.

Our team ensures a seamless process from plan creation to grant application—maximising your funding opportunities while setting the stage for sustainable, productive woodland management.

Woodland Creation

Whether you're aiming to establish a thriving native broadleaf woodland or a high-yield, commercially productive plantation, Greenleaf Forestry offers the knowledge, creativity, and technical expertise to bring your vision to life.

Our consultants work closely with landowners to understand their goals and site conditions, developing bespoke woodland creation designs and management plans that align with both ecological priorities and available funding streams.

We’re well-versed in navigating the complex landscape of woodland creation grants, including:

  • Countryside Stewardship Woodland Creation

  • Forestry Commission’s Woodland Creation and Maintenance grants

  • Woodland Carbon Fund

  • Smaller grants led by NGOs and local authorities

With extensive experience in both the application process and on-the-ground implementation of tree planting schemes, we guide clients through every stage—from initial concept and species selection to mapping, design, and funding applications.

Our goal is to maximise the environmental, economic, and social value of every new woodland—while ensuring your project is fully supported by the most suitable funding available.

Harvesting & Timber Management

Greenleaf Forestry consultants pride themselves on providing expert timber harvesting and woodland management advice, finding the right local contracting teams and matching them to the project. From large scale mechanical  harvesters down to horse drawn forwarders for protected and vulnerable sites, we have the contacts.

Our woodland managers are experts in understanding timber products and their values. We sell to a large number of timber merchants throughout  Gloucestershire, Somerset, Wiltshire, Oxfordshire, Herefordshire, Worcestershire & Devon. Using our contacts and know how we able to achieve higher returns and ensure detailed contracts are in place.

On our estates where the client is using wood chip biomass we help monitor usage and plan the supply. Whether it be self-supply management through detailed coppicing or thinning regimes or arranging roundwood or chip to be delivered on time, we can help.

Grant Support & Woodland Funding Guidance

Grant Support & Woodland Funding Guidance

At Greenleaf Forestry Ltd, we help landowners unlock the full potential of their woodlands by guiding them through the complex and ever-evolving landscape of UK forestry grants. With a wide range of funding opportunities now available—from government-backed schemes to private carbon markets—our consultants are here to ensure you make the most of what’s on offer.

We stay up to date with the latest woodland and forestry grants, including:

  • Countryside Stewardship: including Woodland Creation, Maintenance, and Management options

  • England Woodland Creation Offer (EWCO): offering flexible support for new woodland projects, including payments for public benefits like biodiversity and water quality

  • Woodland Carbon Code: enabling income from verified carbon credits through woodland creation

  • Tree Health Grants: supporting the removal and replanting of diseased or vulnerable woodland

  • Local Nature Recovery and Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI): future-focused support for integrating woodland with agricultural systems

  • NGO and local authority schemes: including regionally targeted funding for conservation and habitat restoration

Our team has deep experience in identifying the most suitable funding mix for your goals, handling everything from application preparation to scheme implementation.

Balancing Woodland Success: Social, Environmental & Economic Viability

At Greenleaf, we believe sustainable woodland management depends on finding the right balance between social, environmental, and economic value. That’s why we don’t just help you plant or manage trees—we help you build a long-term, resilient woodland enterprise.

Through expert mensuration (measuring standing timber), we can forecast your woodland’s timber yield and annual returns. We then integrate this with potential grant income and any funding limitations to develop realistic, forward-thinking budgets.

Our goal is to ensure your woodland project is not only ecologically beneficial, but also financially viable and aligned with broader land management objectives.

Tree Surveys & Risk Management Services

At Greenleaf Forestry Ltd, we provide expert advice and practical support for all aspects of tree safety, woodland risk assessment, and arboricultural planning. From individual tree health inspections to full pre-works site assessments and method statements, our team delivers tailored solutions for landowners, estate managers, developers, and public bodies.

Meeting Legal Requirements & Minimising Risk

With the growing impact of tree pests and diseases, alongside the effects of climate change, there is increasing legal and regulatory focus on the management of trees near:

  • Public rights of way

  • Roadsides and highways

  • Residential or commercial properties

  • Public access areas such as parks and trails

As a duty-holder, landowners and managers have a legal obligation under occupiers’ liability laws and common law precedent to take “reasonable steps” to prevent foreseeable harm from trees. This includes carrying out regular tree surveys and acting on findings.

What We Offer:

  • Tree Risk Zoning & Assessment Plans: We classify zones based on usage and exposure to help prioritise survey effort in high-risk areas.

  • Scheduled Tree Inspections: Tailored to your site’s risk profile, in line with current industry best practice (e.g. National Tree Safety Group) and recent case law guidance.

  • Tree Health & Condition Reports: Including identification of disease, structural integrity issues, and remedial recommendations.

  • Method Statements for Works: Especially important for development, utilities, and forestry operations.

Why Choose Greenleaf?

  • Site-specific quotes with no-obligation consultations

  • Automated reminder service for when your next survey is due—free of charge

  • Experienced, qualified consultants with up-to-date knowledge of forestry and arboricultural legislation

Let us help you stay compliant, reduce liability, and protect both people and trees. Contact us today to discuss your requirements or arrange a survey.
